Benromach is a Speyside distillery that has risen from the ashes after ceasing production for more than a decade in the 80’s and 90’s. Since being acquired by Gordon and MacPhail in 1993, it has enjoyed a Lazarus-like renaissance and is now rightly regarded as one of Speyside’s most challenging distilleries.

This is certainly evident in their multi-award-winning 10-year old Single Malt. Speyside whiskies have a somewhat unfair reputation for being mild and gentle but this is certainly not the case with this single malt.

It has been matured for the first nine years in 4/5 bourbon and 1/5 sherry casks before spending its final year together in sherry casks. The result is a single malt with a complex blend of sweetness, spiciness, and a rather unexpected peatiness that has plenty to give neat but really comes to life with the addition of a splash of water.

This is not a whisky for the novices looking to feel their way into the Speysides. This is a whisky that shows the full potential of what a Speyside whisky can offer and every sip will offer you something different.

Shot to the top...

For a 10 year old it packs in a fair bit of complexity. It has the fruit flavours that every Speyside should, it has some lively spices and then a delicate thread of peaty smoke undercurrent. You can sit back and savour this one.
