A terrific single malt, this expression contains the contents of three former Apera fortified wine barrels – which were smaller than standard at 100 litres each. This small barrel size makes for a greater ratio of spirit to wood, meaning that whisky will interact with the oak faster. Combined with Mendooran temperature extremes, this makes for a speedy maturation. The final product is a rich, fruity and slightly nutty dram.

Found about five hours’ drive from Sydney, Blackgate Distillery is a family affair, operated by Brian and Genise Hollingworth.

The Hollingworths learnt their trade before leaping into the whisky business, spending time in Scotland, Ireland and other parts of Australia researching distillation. The distillery itself was a bit of a community project, with friends and family helping to raise the shed and stills that make up Blackgate Distillery.

During the summer, Genise makes full-bodied pot still rum at Blackgate, whilst the winter sees Brian distill delightful single malt.

This dram is an excellent example of the distillery’s spirit – the product of three casks, numbers BG040, BG048 and BG049 which were originally distilled between December 2015 and April 2016!
