Part of the celebrated Van Winkle family of Bourbons, Old Rip Van Winkle is a classic wheated whiskey. For this Bourbon, wheat has replaced the rye as the “flavouring grain”, ensuring a sweeter and less spicy profile. Old Rip Van Winkle 10 is said to have been aged in the “Sweet Spots” of the Buffalo Trace warehouse, where the conditions are ideal for maturing whiskey.

Inspired by the legendary distiller, Julian “Pappy” van Winkle, and Washington Irving’s enduring classic of American literature, Rip Van Winkle. In this short story, a man discovers a gang of mysterious strangers in the woods, drinking their liquor and falling asleep. He awakes to discover that decades have passed, and his village is very different to how he left it…
It is Rip Van Winkle who features on the bottle’s label, and much like this fictional character, the spirit inside has slumbered in wood for some considerable time! This 107 Proof (53.5% ABV) dram has been bottled at close to barrel proof, with just a touch of Kentuckian limestone-filtered water added.

Tasting notes
Nose
Unmistakably a wheated Bourbon, with notes of freshly baked bread, sweetcorn, caramel, vanilla, toffee apples and freshly cut oak.
Taste
Rich, buttery and full bodied, with a sticky-date pudding profile of dried fruits, sweet bread, toffee and vanilla. Some subtle baking spices and intense oak come with time.
Finish
Long, and replete with gingerbread, lingering molasses, vanilla oak, tannic orange and extra dried fruits.
