The renaissance in the Irish whiskey industry has been one of the whisky world’s greatest success stories if the past decade. Bushmills has been one of the constants in the Irish whiskey world through the bad times and the good and claims to be the world’s oldest whiskey distillery, dating back to 1608.  

It’s Steamship Sherry Cask Single Malt is of a slightly more recent vintage having been first launched in 2016. It was intended to mark the 125th anniversary of the SS Bushmills, from which the distillery takes its name and was originally intended solely for the travel market.

This whiskey has been triple-distilled in first-fill oloroso sherry buttes. That strong sherry influence can be found in both the colour and the flavours. This is a whisky dripping is fruity, sweet goodness and is ideal as an aperitif, either on its own, over ice, or with a little water.

Tasting notes

Nose

Sweet and fruity with masses of red berries and succulent peaches and plumbs.

Taste

All fruit and sweetness. A toffee apple dipped in blackcurrant jam and then rolled in a cinnamon that dissolves slowly over your tongue.

Finish

Medium length and the merest hint of spice alongside dried fruit and more cinnamon.
