What is ABV?

ABV stands for Alcohol By Volume. It's a globally recognised standard for measuring the alcohol content in drinks and is indicated by a percentage. The percentage is the amount of pure alcohol or ethanol present in a drink. So a 40% ABV means that 40% of the drink is pure alcohol. Generally gins range between 40% and 50% alcohol. This is higher than beer and wine that are generally under 14%, but lower than some other liquors such as vodka that can go as high as 90%.
