Amrut is a Sanskrit word which means ‘nectar of the gods’ and in their Fusion Single Malt, they are really living up to that billing. Amrut Distilleries are the oldest in India. They have been in operation since 1948 and in 1982 produced the first ever Indian single malt.
The Fusion Single Malt is so named because of the source of its barley. It is made from 75% unpeated Indian barley, which has been grown at the feet of the Himalayas using traditional agricultural practices, and 25% peated Scottish barley.
These are then aged separately for around four years before being ‘fused’ together for a further three months. The result is a rich yet spicy single malt packed full of fruity flavours with a sumptuous smoky finish. It has been one of Amrut’s most popular whisky’s for the best part of a decade now and it’s easy to see why. Tasting notes
Nose
A rich and creamy sweetness with masses of fruit, apricots, mangoes, and peaches. There is a gentle hint of that Scottish peat smoke and plenty of oaky resonance.
Taste
On the palate, this hits you with a zing of citrus fruits, oranges and limes before developing into a heavy and rich flavor packed full of dark chocolate, freshly ground coffee, and oaky vanilla. There is still a gentle peat-fueled spiciness with cinnamon and black pepper but this only ever compliments, it never overwhelms.
Finish
This spiciness rises to a triumphant crescendo in the long finish but there is a marmalade sweetness there too.
