If you like ‘em light and fruity, this dram will be for you. Triple distilled in the Lowland manner, Auchentoshan Three Wood has been aged in a combination of Bourbon, Oloroso and Pedro Ximenez Sherry casks. Triple distillation means this whisky enters the barrel at a whopping 82% ABV, before maturation and a little pure Scottish water produces a light-bodied and approachable drop.
More Details
Sometimes nicknamed “The Breakfast Whisky” (note: we don’t recommend whisky for breakfast!) Auchentoshan is known for its lighter, sweeter style style, derived partly through triple distillation.
Although found at distilleries in other parts of Scotland, triple distillation is particularly associated with the Lowlands, and is said to derive from the Irish style of whisky (or whiskey) making, as many Irish migrants moved to the Lowland area.
Auchentoshan has had a somewhat perilous history, having survived a bombing during World War Two – the bomb crater is now used as a pond to store cooling water for the distillery’s machinery.
This dram has been aged in three different casks, ensuring great complexity and character.

Tasting notes
Nose
All three casks are in action here: with gentle vanilla from the Bourbon, typical nutty Oloroso aromas and some sweet figs in syrup that suggest PX Sherry.
Taste
A gentle, velvety mouthfeel offers ripe plums, dark chocolate, cinnamon and nutmeg spice, and a concentrated, clear malted barley flavour.
Finish
On the shorter side, with a swift and fleeting flash of Sherried spice (cinnamon, nutmeg, anise and cloves), toffee, milk chocolate and vanilla-oak.
