Caol Ila is well known as one of the lighter, more nuanced and delicate of the Islay single malts with the 12-year-old showing subtle citrus fruit with the signature Islay smoke. Firm and smooth, it begins sweetly then yields a fragrant smokiness and a sweet-smoky, lingering finish.

Tasting notes
Nose
Fresh, herbal. Rubbed peppermint leaves, stemmy, damp grass, smoky. Oily, cigar leaves, smoked ham, hickory. Lemon peels at the harbour.
Taste
Smoked meat, honied pear, cinnamon, melon, waxy citrus and light bits of spice, tropical fruit, mint and oil.
Finish
Long finish, overall enough subtleties and complexities to be impressive, but not brutal and wearing out the palate.
