Bunnahabhain is notable for being an Islay distillery that mostly distils unpeated single malt. This bottling of 11 year old whisky has been produced by independent bottlers Gordon and MacPhail for their Discovery series. This range looks at three different flavour profiles that define Scottish whisky: smoky, Bourbon and Sherried – with this juice a perfect example of the latter style.
More Details
Bunna’, as it is affectionately known, is a remarkable distillery from the Victorian era, when a boom in whisky drinking brought bolder designs and larger producers.
Bunnahabhain features very large stills, which are only partly filled, ensuring that the whisky has plenty of copper contact, and creating a lighter final product. Although located in Islay, the distillery only peats about 20% of its spirit, with this parcel set aside for its own bottlings under the Toiteach name.
Sherry cask is the style here, with the fortified wine lending depth and character to the light spirit. Found close to the sea, a maritime quality is detectable in some expressions.
This bottling delivers a classic Sherried malt whisky style – with heaps of fruitcake, spices and wine richness. The whisky has been selected and matured by Gordan and MacPhail, a historic independent bottlers based out of a grocery store in Elgin, in the heart of Speyside.

Tasting notes
Nose
Fruitcake, with a strong citrus rind aroma joined by nutmeg, cloves, rich plums, cinnamon and marmalade on malt bread. A little dark chocolate comes with time.
Taste
Instantly creamy and rich, with chocolate orange, cinnamon, cloves, brown sugar, sultanas and more plums. Some drying oak emerges after a while. This really is fruitcake in a cup.
Finish
Short to medium, with a wave of dried fruit sweetness, wine tannins and oak. Terrific stuff from Bunna and G&M.
