Highland Park distillery, located on the Orkney Islands, is Scotland’s most northerly distillery and has been distilling whisky since the early 19th century.
It’s 12 year old single malt is widely recognized as one of the best scotches in its age range. These days it is branded as ‘Viking Honour’ in a nod to the fact that Orkney and much of northern Scotland was part of the Viking Empire. Indeed, the founder of Highland Park, Magnus Eunson was a descendent of those Viking settlements.
Tradition permeates much of what Highland Park does. The complexity of this particular dram is down the use of local Orcadian peat in the distillery floor maltings. Highland Park is one of the few distilleries left that still uses this labor-intensive process.
The result is a truly special Scotch; smoky, yet rich with plenty of citrus fruit flavours and a floral nose. No whisky aficionado should miss out on Highland Park and its 12 year old single malt is a great place to start.
