Kavalan loves to give their whisky a musical theme. They also love to make delicious single malts, and luckily for us, this bottling ticks both boxes. Finished for a time in Sherry casks, this whisky has been aged in the subtropical climate of Taiwan, which makes for accelerated maturation, and a complex spirit in just a few years. Some parts of the Kavalan warehouse regularly reach over 40ºC – a far cry from their Scottish counterparts.
More Details
Named after the Kavalan people of Taiwan, the Kavalan distillery is operated by the King Car group, a major Taiwanese manufacturer.
The distillery’s juice made shockwaves in the whisky industry in 2010, when it beat out challengers from Scotland in a high profile blind tasting. In 2015, one of Kavalan’s offerings was named “World Whisky of the Year”.
This is an excellent rendition of the distillery’s spirit - rich, but still youthful, vibrant and accessible. A great dram.

Tasting notes
Nose
A light polished oak fragrance greets the drinker, giving way to Sherried notes of red cherries, light prunes and some bright, youthful malt. A little pepper and green banana.
Taste
very gentle approach with sweet cherries, more polished wood, light vanilla, sweet red wine, rum and raisin ice cream and some drying darker oak notes.
Finish
Short to medium length, with some lingering dried fruit sweetness and a little oily walnut. Impressive, easy drinking Taiwanese whisky.
