The great Nikka distillery has produced a great Japanese blend.
Nikka is one of the two great Japanese whisky produces. Founded by the legendary Masataka Taketsuru, who studied whisky production in Scotland, before returning with a wife to work for Suntory and then creating his own distillery that would quickly become its biggest rival.
More Details
The award-winning From the Barrel blend features whiskies distilled from both the Miyagikyo and Yoichi distilleries. It is bottled at 51.4% making it cask-strength and features whiskies from a huge variety of casks, including bourbon barrels, sherry butts and refill hogsheads.
It is a blend of the highest quality, well-balanced, complex, warming, and smooth. It is also wonderfully presented in a square medicine-style bottle complete with simple grey label. It does benefit from a little water if you want to get all the flavours out.
From the Barrel is also everything you want from a Japanese whisky. One expert has commented that “it smells of Japan… smells like old wooden Japanese houses.” We haven’t spent as long as Japan as her, but we wouldn’t disagree.

Tasting notes
Nose
Spicy and rich but well balanced. Floral tones and spiced oak mix imperceptibly with citrus fruits and vanilla hints.
Taste
Deep and full-bodied. Packed with oak-spices, pepper, cinnamon, and cloves alongside orange rind, dried fruits all balanced out with an almost-caramel sweetness that permeates throughout.
Finish
Long, warm, and fruity with a fading spiciness.
