The jewel in the Pulteney crown. Like the other bottlings in their standard range, this whisky was aged in American oak barrels, before a finishing period in Oloroso Sherry butts. A quarter-century in the cask has produced a sumptuous single malt, with heaps of character. Simply put, one of the best drams around.
More Details
Old Pulteney distillery is famed for its maritime character, and strange shaped stills (reflected by the design of the bottles). Legend has it, the top of the wash still is flat because after it had arrived, distillery staff realised it was too large to fit under the roof, so had to cut it off.
You can forgive them for not wanting to send it back. Wick, where Pulteney is found, is one of the more remote village in Scotland, and for decades was only accessible by boat. All of this lore merely enhances Pulteney’s coastal credentials.

Tasting notes
Nose
A thick dark chocolate aroma opens the nose, followed by intense nutmeg, cloves and vanilla notes, mature dusty oak, caramelised apples and white sultanas.
Taste
A silky, full bodied mouthfeel brings flavours of candied lemon peel, butterscotch sauce, cacao nibs, vanilla, nutmeg and sticky dates. Sea spray recalls Pulteney’s maritime location.
Finish
Long and luscious, with mouth-tingling crack blacked pepper and cinnamon, balanced by salted caramel, intense oak tannins and sweet raisins.
