A peated dram from… India?! That’s right! This is a medium peated single malt from Goa-based distillery Paul John. The peat for this dram is shipped all the way from Islay in Scotland, where it is burnt under Paul John’s high quality six-row Indian barley. The result is a fascinating, smoky whisky.

John Distilleries dates back to 1992, when they began producing a series of molasses based “whiskies” which were closer to coloured rum or vodka than actual whisky. One prominent brand, Original Choice, is sold in cartons across India.
Paul John, the company’s founder, maintained a greater ambition: to launch a high quality single malt that would showcase India’s delicious barley and unique climate for aging spirits. He achieved this in 2012, with the launch of Paul John Single Malt. The brand has been a great success, helping to establish India as a rising star of the whisky world, and winning accolades from drinkers across the globe.

Tasting notes
Nose
Restrained peat and barbequed meats open the nose, accompanied by fresh citrus peel, warm honeyed malt, sliced apples and smoked creme brulee.
Taste
Seriously weighty spirit, with the peat smoke taking a backseat to grilled pineapple, espresso beans, honeyed oat cakes and charred oak. Cardamom and star anise spice lends further complexity.
Finish
Medium length, with lingering notes of cracked black pepper, peat smoke, toffee and drying oak. Terrific peated juice from an unlikely source.
