A tremendous single malt whisky from a mystery distillery. This dram has been bottled by Elixir Distillers for their Port Askaig range, after 28 years of long maturation. The spirit was aged in refilled American hogsheads and has had plenty of time to develop real depth and complexity. Islay malts are something special at this age, with the smoke giving way to delicate, nuanced flavours.

Tasting notes

Nose

Immediately complex – with heaps of rich charred malt aromas, alongside gentle peat smoke, butter on freshly toasted bread and polished oak.

Taste

Full bodied and salty, offering flavours of dense, tannic oak, rich peat smoke, baked apples, dried flowers and heather honey, and a little chocolate chip.

Finish

Extraordinarily long, as lingering notes of lemon rind, sandalwood, vanilla, dried herbs, grassy peat and tinned peaches dance on the palate.
