Perhaps the most highly regarded and desired of all Japanese whiskies, this bottling was Japan’s first seriously marketed single malt, and comes from Japan’s first commercial whisky distillery, Yamazaki. Age statements in Japanese single malt are increasingly rare, and Yamazaki 12 is one of finest, showcasing all the depth, complexity and harmony we’ve come to expect from this distillery.
Found between Osaka and Kyoto, Yamazaki first opened way back in 1923, when it was the first dedicated whisky distillery to be constructed in Japan. This seismic moment in Japanese distilling history also marked a point of collaboration between the two great founders of Japan’s whisky industry: Masataka Taketsuru, and Shinjiro Torii.
The pair collaborated on the building of Yamazaki, picking out the location for its proximity to two major cities, and the quality of its water, which was praised by the great tea-master Sen no Rikyu. Taketsuru and Torii would later be rivals, when Taketsuru left Torii’s company to create Nikka, and whilst Torii’s operation became the juggernaut of Japanese whisky, Suntory.
Yamazaki itself is an incredibly versatile distillery, using 12 stills of different kinds to create a wide range of spirit. Yamazaki 12 is a classic single malt, bright and fruity, with delicate oaky flavours.
