You may have heard the nautical phrase “any port in a storm”, and Talisker, with its home on the rugged and windswept Isle of Skye, has endured many such storms. Port Ruighe, pronounced “Portree” is named after Skye’s once-busy port, and has been finished in Port Casks.
More Details
One of the most highly regarded distilleries in Scotland, Talisker makes a high quality of peated, Island-style whisky. For many years, Talisker was the only producing distillery on the Isle of Skye, regularly ranked as one of the most beautiful areas in the world. They are now joined by Torabhaig (pronounced ‘To-ra-vaig’) who released their first official single malt in 2021.
Port Ruighe has been aged initially in a combination of heavily charred European and American oak refill barrels, before enjoying its finishing period in Port casks. The whisky is bottled at 45.8% ABV, considered Talisker’s “traditional strength”.

Tasting notes
Nose
Opens up with intense smoked meat and a blast of earthy peat, before softening to reveal dark chocolate, juicy plums and red grapes.
Taste
Again, smoky peat takes the lead, accompanied by cracked black pepper and sea spray. Port emerges with notes of red wine tannins, sweet cinnamon and rich cherry cola.
Finish
Medium length finish, with waves of espresso, dried cranberries and lip-smacking peat lingering. Benefits from the bump in strength considerably.
