The Laphroaig Distillery was founded in 1810 by brothers Donald and Alexandar Johnston in the southernmost tip of Islay. The distilleries' unique flavour is attributed to being near the coast, as well as the high moss content of its peat. The distillery is currently run by the US company Fortune Brands Inc and since 2002, has been the best-selling Islay single malt whisky worldwide.
The original Laphroaig 10 Year Old continues to be distilled in the same way as it was 75 years ago by Ian Hunter. This multi-award winning expression has found Gold at Jim Murray's Whisky Bible in 2019, Gold at Scottish Whisky Awards in 2019, and Master at the Asian Spirits Masters in 2018.
