Cooper’s Choice is a range from the Vintage Malt Whisky Company that pays homage to the barrel-makers, or coopers, and their often overlooked role in creating the whisky we love. This dram from Highland distillery Ardmore was distilled in 2003, and has aged for 17 years in a single Bourbon barrel. The result is a classic Ardmore, serving up all the delicious peat smoke we love from this distillery.
Cooper is not an unusual surname, pointing to the fact that barrel making used to be a much more popular profession. These days, there are just a few coopers working around the world to create barrels and casks for the wine, whisky and beer industries. Their work is skillful and precise, and worthy of recognition from a spirits business that owes them so much.
This is what Cooper’s Choice does – celebrates the people behind the scenes that make whisky possible. Traditionally, cooperss would have plenty of contact with the spirit when making and repairing casks, and they almost certainly helped themselves to the odd “wee dram” of their favourites – making those the Cooper’s Choice.
This single vintage, single cask Ardmore malt whisky is an example of the high quality spirit that this range contains.

Fresh, herbaceous peat smoke with a hint of sea spray and heather honey opens the nose, soon joined by baked apples, a little winter spice and sweet nuts.
Sweet, smoky barley flavours of peat-roasted malt and subtle citrus rind dominate the palate, accompanied by orchard fruits, salted caramel and oaky vanilla.
Spicy smoke lingers on this long finish, followed by tannic oak, thyme, rosemary and powdered ginger.
