The Glenlivet was the first distillery to receive a license under the 1823 Excise Act, which largely pulled the rug from under the rampant illicit distilling industry. As you can imagine, this was not a popular decision with the outlaw whisky-makers, and The Glenlivet’s first distillery manager was armed with two pistols to defend himself. Buttery, with some dark chocolate and fresh mandarin peel. Complex and inviting, with some fresh pastry and malty cake notes appearing as it opens up.
A smooth vanilla-led opening is contrasted against vivid cinnamon, white pepper and nutmeg spice, with dried mango, baked apples and chopped mint adding complexity.
White pepper, fresh mint and almond paste cuts through a buttery mouthfeel. Shortish in length, but not lacking in complexity or intrigue.
