Another Gordon and MacPhail bottling from the “Sherried” category of their Discovery series: which focuses more on style of spirit, than region of distillery. This Glenrothes expression displays totally differently to the other two drams in this box, with a funkier, nuttier style of Sherried whisky on show. Glenrothes’ typically weighty and slightly musky spirit is perfectly complemented by the rich and spicy Sherry cask.
More Details
Found in Rothes, in the heart of Speyside, Glenrothes distillery is known for producing one of the more complex whiskies in the region.
The distillery’s stills are tall with boil bulbs that increase copper contact, and add weight to the spirit. This muscular quality is why Glenrothes is so well suited to Sherry maturation, as shown here.
Gordon and MacPhail, possibly the most esteemed bottler in Scotland, has produced this whisky. The spirit seems to show signs of Pedro Ximenez maturation (Pedro Ximenez is a sweeter, almost syrupy dessert wine with flavours of nuts and raisins) though we can’t be sure!

Tasting notes
Nose
Like walking into the distillery warehouse. Aromas of roasted peanuts, hazelnuts and melted chocolate greet the drinker, joined by a dense maltiness, dessert wine and sweet oak.
Taste
Full bodied with a slightly meaty malt quality. Subtle pressed flowers and fruits of the forest emerge, accompanied by raspberry jam, blackcurrant cordial and thick oak.
Finish
Long, with notes of lingering dark chocolate, charred oak and citrus rind. The archetype of a good Sherried malt.
