Gordon & MacPhail are one of the oldest and most highly regarded bottlers of Scotch whisky in the business. Their “Distillery Labels” series pairs iconic distilleries with wonderfully retro labels. This dram is a classic 15 year old from the Beast of Dufftown, Mortlach, that has been aged in a combination of first fill and refill Sherry casks. Mortlach’s meaty style is known to shine Sherried indie bottlings, as this dram shows.
More Details
Mortlach is one of those distilleries that is said to fare better as an independent bottling, and there are few better independent bottlers than Gordon & MacPhail.
The oldest bottler in continuous operation, G&M dates back to 1895, and began life as a grocery store in the Speyside town of Elgin (home to several distilleries). This shop still exists to this day – and alongside a range of delicious drams, you can still buy your groceries there!
After a young John Urquhart joined the business, and proved extremely adept at selecting and blending whiskies, the company expanded the spirits side of the enterprise. They have since released several ranges of whisky regarded as some of the best around: Connoisseurs Choice, Discover, Cask Strength and Distillery Labels.
This bottling comes from the last collection – and is a terrific example of Mortlach’s 2.81 times distilled spirit.

Tasting notes
Nose
Sherry is immediately apparent, with sweet raisins, sultanas and dried apricot underpinned by a core of intense malt, oak and vanilla.
Taste
Oily and full mouthfeel, that brings more toasted malt, milk chocolate, ginger, peaches, clove studded oranges and sugared walnuts.
Finish
Medium in length, and driven by a core of malt and drying oak, with flashes of gingerbread, orange juice, black cherry and leather.
