The inaugural Japanese single malt from the Kanosuke Distillery, which opened in 2017. Unusually, the distillery uses three pot stills of different designs, allowing it to create a range of spirit styles. This dram has been aged for three years in a mixture of barrels, including re-charred American white oak, ex-Mellowed Kozuru aged shochu casks, and is bottled at the robust strength of 58%.

The Japanese whisky hype-train shows no signs of slowing, with new distilleries seemingly popping up constantly. One of these new producers is Kanosuke, a distillery located in the warm climate of Kyushu island – meaning its spirit style is rather different to those created in the cooler parts of Japan, or indeed, in Scotland and Ireland.
The nearby city of Kagoshima has been nicknamed “The Naples of the East” for its large, handsome bay, and Kanosuke hope to capture the essence of their surroundings, with their motto “Mellow Land, Mellow Whisky”.

Tasting notes
Nose
A surprisingly light nose, given the strength of this dram, with gentle aromas of lime rind, coconut flakes, sweet malt, dried fruits and fragrant oak.
Taste
Full bodied, and somewhat spicy with flavours of cinnamon, black pepper and tingly oak-spice. Some fresh flowers emerge, alongside vanilla, malt and green apple.
Finish
Medium long finish, with more of the palate’s intense spices, chocolate orange, vanilla, sea spray and caramel.
