Mortlach is known as ‘The Beast of Dufftown’ – with the distillery’s unique distillation regimen producing a muscular and meaty spirit. This particular expression is notable for being the only Sherried whisky in 2020’s Special Releases outturn, having been finished for a time in Oloroso and Pedro Ximenez Sherry casks. Mortlach suits sherry casks, as is shown by this sweet and savoury, and completely delicious, single malt. The power of this dram is illustrated by the red deer stag on its packaging.

A still set-up ranked as the most complex in Scotland is the driving force behind the distillery’s hallmark of muscular, meaty malt. Mortlach’s reputation as ‘The Beast of Dufftown’ means it is highly sought after by blenders, looking to use the spirit to lend heft and complexity to their products.
Thick, weighty whiskies like Mortlach are ideal for long maturation and Sherry casks, which help to tame the pure power of the new make. This bottling is an excellent example, with 21 years and the twin Sherry cask finishing creating a complex, sweet and full bodied dram

Tasting notes
Nose
The sherry is present from the start, with powerful aromas of ripe plums and figs, sultanas, and sweet wine taking hold. These subside to showcase Mortlach’s signature meaty malt.
Taste
Faithful to the nose, with a spiced oak flavour bringing depth and complexity. There’s some brightening lime rind, followed by toasted hazelnut and a rum and raisin like quality. Full bodied.
Finish
A seriously lush and warming finish, which alternates between Sherried fruit, cloves, brown sugar and Mortlach’s savoury maltiness.
