Johnnie Walker is synonymous with blended Scotch whisky across the world. From humble beginnings as a grocery store, the brand has grown to become the best-selling, and most widely distributed brand of blended Scotch on the market.
In the early days, supply and quality of whisky was inconsistent, so shopkeepers would often blend spirit together to ensure a stable product, labelling it with their own name. After the advent of the column still, grain whisky began to be blended with malt spirit – giving blended whisky a softer, sweet taste that appealed to a wider audience. Blended whisky took off, and for the Walker family, it rose from 8% to represent over 90% of the family’s income.
Johnnie Walker is famed for its long running Red and Black Label bottlings, which date back to 1909. However, in recent years, they have also added some higher-end expressions, including this 18 year old dram (previously known as Platinum Label).
